At a luxury resort in Mozambique, overhearing filthy rich Brazilians and spoiled Boston honeymooners talk about their pampered travels. Happy that my first African experience is not just the glossy experience of Kruger and the beach. Wishing I could explore the 'real' side of Africa more, but also have heard horror stories. One of a person being robbed, by the police (!), in Maputo. Another of a policeman that loans out his uniform to robbers when he is off duty. So experiencing the authentic carries a real risk, something a solo white woman has to be acutely aware of. Unsure of how I could stay safe but see more...

Then I took a drive through Vilanculos. The locals glared suspiciously at the truck. I didn't see a single white person. I couldn't imagine walking around the city by myself!
